OneCast Instruction Manual
Before you may use OneCast for the first time, you must register your Xbox with this device (hereafter referred to as iOS device)
as follows:
- You must have the iOS device that
OneCast is running on connected to the same network as your
Xbox. For most people, this means the iOS device will be
connected to their home network via WiFi, and the Xbox
connected to the same network via LAN cable. Both Xbox and
iOS device must be able to connect to the
internet in order for remote play to work.
- Make sure that remote play is enabled
on your Xbox by going to Settings - Devices &
connections - Remote features, then making sure that Enable
remote features is ticked:
- Turn on your Xbox and sign in with
the gamertag that you wish to use for remote play.
- Launch OneCast on your iOS device, and
press the Register Xbox button.
- At this point you must sign in to the
Microsoft account corresponding to the Xbox Live gamertag that
you wish to use for remote play. You will be presented with
the external Microsoft account sign in website; complete the
sign in process to continue.
IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE: It is a
requirement to sign in to your Microsoft account within the
OneCast interface; this is necessary to register the Xbox with
the app. We understand that some users may be concerned about
entering their account credentials within a third party
application. We must stress that OneCast does not monitor,
intercept or otherwise manipulate anything you enter into the
account sign in page - this information is all sent directly
to Microsoft servers and is not visible in any way to the app.
For those that want absolute peace of mind regarding their
account security, we recommend that you enable "two
step verification" on your account. When this has
been enabled, each time that you sign in to your account you
will get a security code sent by email, phone or an
authenticator app, and this security code must be entered in
addition to your username and password in order to sign in.
This means that even if somebody knew your username and
password, they would still not be able to access your account
as they would not have the required security code (which are
time limited and change every sign in attempt). For more
information about two step verification, including how to turn
this on for your account, please see here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12408/microsoft-account-about-two-step-verification
- If you have multiple Xbox consoles, then OneCast will ask you which of
these you'd like to register.
- After a brief loading period, you
should receive a message confirming that the Xbox is now
registered - congratulations, you may now enjoy remote play
with OneCast! If you receive an error then see the Troubleshooting
section below.
Once your Xbox is registered, simply press the Play
button from the OneCast home screen to connect to the
console. If your Xbox is turned off (and you have set the console to go to Sleep when it turns off via Power options) then it will be turned on - this means that there is no need to leave the Xbox turned on all the time; you can leave it off and it will automatically be turned on when OneCast connects. Please note that if you set the console to Shut-down (energy saving) then it will not be possible for OneCast to turn the console on automatically.
Xbox Party Chat is supported, allowing you to communicate with
friends using voice chat while gaming with OneCast. This is
disabled by default, and can be enabled after you begin your
streaming session from the in-game toolbar. Alternatively you can turn on the
Start with party chat enabled configuration item
on the OneCast Settings screen, in which case party chat will be
enabled as soon as your streaming session begins.
OneCast uses state-of-the-art microphone echo cancellation to
prevent intolerable echoing when using party chat with the Xbox
audio playing through loudspeakers rather than a headset. Please
note however that this is primarily intended for those using
both the built-in speakers and microphone on their iOS device (which
allows you to enjoy party chat without requiring a headset), and
is not guaranteed to work with third party external speakers or
microphones.
OneCast supports the creation of multiple Xbox profiles. A
profile links to a specific Xbox Live gamertag on a specific
Xbox console. If you have multiple consoles and/or multiple
Xbox Live gamertags, then you can create a separate profile for
each. Then when you wish to connect to a different console or
gamertag, you can simply select the corresponding profile from
the Xbox profiles screen.
On the home screen there are 4 icons along the bottom:
 |
Opens the Settings screen where you can configure
various aspects of OneCast. Some settings are specific to the currently selected
profile while others are global settings that apply to all
profiles. |
 |
Opens
the Xbox profiles screen where you may select which
profile you wish to use (allowing you to connect to
different consoles and/or Xbox Live gamertags).
Additionally, you may create a new Xbox profile and
export an existing Xbox profile to the Apple TV
version of OneCast from this screen. |

This
button appears to indicate when a supported physical game controller is connected. |
OneCast supports several control methods. You may connect any
Xbox wireless controller, PlayStation wireless controller, or any other supported physical
controller directly to your iOS device. If
there are no physical controllers connected to your iOS device, then an
on-screen controller will be overlaid on top of the game
display:
When using the on-screen controller, some controller buttons (X, View, Menu) by default are accessed
through an in-game toolbar. L3/R3 can be enabled either by double tapping the on-screen analog
sticks, or for iOS devices that support 3D touch, by pressing
down harder on the virtual on-screen analog sticks. You can optionally
also add any of these as fixed buttons by customising the on-screen
controller.
To open the in-game toolbar, you may swipe up from the bottom of the screen or
press the toolbar button on the on-screen controller, located at
the bottom-middle of the display.
When you wish to stop playing and disconnect from the Xbox,
open the in-game toolbar and press the Quit button.
Various options may be configured via the Settings screen:
Zoomed display
The Xbox outputs video in 16:9 aspect ratio. For devices
such as iPad with a different aspect ratio (4:3), select between
showing the full video at the correct aspect ratio but with
black bars at the top and bottom, or zooming the video so it
fills the entire screen but cuts off the left and right sides.
On-screen controller
If Auto is selected, then the on-screen controller is
only shown when there is no physical controller
connected. If a physical controller is connected, the
on-screen controller will be hidden. Additionally, the on-screen
controller will temporarily hide if there have been no touches
on the screen for 5 seconds. Select Always on or Off
to override the automatic behaviour.
Customise on-screen controller
Here you may fully customise the on-screen controller. OneCast
supports multiple configuration profiles for the on-screen
controller, with each profile having its own settings for the
position and size of various buttons available. The on-screen
controller profile list allows you to choose the active profile
which will be used during game play, in addition to
adding/removing profiles. In order to edit an existing profile,
tap the icon next to the profile name.
From the on-screen controller profile editing screen, you may
move buttons by dragging them and resize buttons by pinching.
Buttons may be manipulated in 3 modes:
- Modify group - changes in size/position affect other buttons
within the same group (for example, moving the left analog
stick will also move the right analog stick by the same
amount).
- Modify single - only the touched button is manipulated.
- Resize all - resize all buttons on the screen by the same
amount.
Tapping and holding a button will bring up a contextual menu
where the button can be removed, or the opacity modified. Some
buttons (L3, R3, view, menu etc) are not included on the
on-screen controller by default but can be added by tapping the
"+" icon in the navigation bar at the top of
the screen. If you make a mistake while editing the controller
and wish to roll back any change, you can utilise the undo
button.
OneCast also supports Apple TV. If you have an Apple TV and
would like to run OneCast on it, you must first register your
Xbox using this iOS version of OneCast and then export the
profile to OneCast for Apple TV as follows:
- Launch OneCast on your Apple TV and press the Register Xbox button. You will be given a 6 letter code.
- On this device go to the Profiles
screen and ensure the profile you want to export is selected.
Then press Export the selected Xbox profile to
Apple TV.
- Enter the 6 letter code provided by the Apple TV. The Xbox profile will then be sent to your Apple TV.
With OneCast you can continue to play your Xbox games while
you're away from home, whenever your iOS device is connected to the
internet; for example at a friend's place, in a coffee shop, or
during your commute
(this is possible over mobile data as well as regular
Wi-Fi). However, in order to enjoy this functionality, the network
that your Xbox is connected to (i.e. your home network) must be
configured correctly. In some cases this can be done
automatically by selecting
Configure for internet play from the OneCast
Settings screen. Please note these important points regarding
internet play:
-
After OneCast has been configured for internet play, from time
to time your home network configuration may change and if this
happens, you will need to re-run the configuration procedure.
-
Your Xbox and iOS device must be on the same local network when you
run the configuration procedure. This means that you must run
the configuration procedure before you attempt to connect
while away from home.
-
The automatic configuration will not work in all cases;
certain routers and network configurations will prevent this
from working. In such cases you will need to manually
configure your home network for internet play.
-
The connection quality can significantly degrade when
connecting over the internet (depending on many external
factors such as your internet service provider).
If after running Configure for internet play, OneCast reports that the configuration was successful, then
no further interaction is required - you may enjoy OneCast while
away from home, over the internet. If you need to manually
configure for internet play, you may do so according to the
following instructions.
Firstly you need to determine the IP address of both your Xbox
and your router. On your Xbox, open Settings then navigate to
General - Network Settings - Advanced settings. You will see something like this:
The number to the right of “IP address” (shown within the green
border above) is the
IP address of your Xbox console. The number to
the right of “Gateway” (shown within the blue border above) is
the IP address of your router.
Next you need to gain access to your router’s configuration
interface, which can be accessed by opening a web browser and
entering the IP address of your router, as determined in the
previous step, in the address bar (ensure that the device you’re
running the browser from is on the same network as your router
when you do this, i.e. your home network). You will then need to
login to your router using the correct username and password -
usually this will be printed on a label somewhere on the body of
your router.
Once you have logged in and gained access to your router’s
configuration interface, you will need to set up port forwarding
to forward the following ports to your Xbox:
Unfortunately the exact process for forwarding ports varies by
router manufacturer - there is no one size fits all approach.
Please see the following guide for an overview of how to perform
port forwarding on various router brands:
https://nordvpn.com/blog/open-ports-on-router/
Please note that both of the above ports have a numeric value of
9002, but the protocol is different - one is UDP and the other
is TCP. If your router allows, you can specify a single mapping
for BOTH TCP and UDP. Some routers allow you to specify both
external and internal ports, others just a single port - in
either case, simply enter 9002.
For the local IP address use that of your Xbox console as
determined above.
If you are asked for a “service name” or similar, you can simply
enter “Xbox remote play 1” and “Xbox remote play 2”; although it
doesn’t really matter.
After the port forwarding is done, re-run
Configure for internet play from the OneCast
Settings screen. This should now complete successfully, in which
case you may now enjoy OneCast away from home!
For those with multiple Xbox consoles on their home network - some additional configuration is required. You will need to create a separate port forward for each console that you wish to access over the internet, and because port 9002 can only be assigned to a single device, you will need to use non-standard values for the external port. An example of port forwarding rules with 3 Xbox consoles on the home network:
- Xbox A: IP address = 192.168.1.50, Internal port = 9002, External port = 9002
- Xbox B: IP address = 192.168.1.51, Internal port = 9002, External port = 9003
- Xbox C: IP address = 192.168.1.52, Internal port = 9002, External port = 9004
You can see from the above example that for each Xbox console, the internal port remains as 9002 but the external ports are different - this is required to differentiate between the different consoles from outside the home network. Once you have such port forwarding configured via your router, then for each Xbox console after you've registered it with OneCast, you need to set the External port override setting to the external port corresponding to that Xbox. So with the example above, Xbox A would have this set to 9002, Xbox B would have it set to 9003 and Xbox C would have it set to 9004.
If you cannot control games through
OneCast using the virtual on-screen controller or a physical controller connected to your iOS device:
- If you have an wireless Xbox controller turned on and connected to the console (as opposed to connected to your iOS device), first turn off the wireless controller, then reconnect to the console with OneCast.
- Ensure that OneCast is connecting using the same gamertag
that is currently signed in and using the Xbox console.
- The controller may have gone to sleep due to inactivity. Hold the X button until the controller turns back on and connects with your iOS device.
If you experience poor connection quality:
- Connect your iOS device via a 5GHz WiFi connection instead
of 2.4GHz if possible. 5GHz networks are generally much less
congested and experience less interference.
- Use a LAN cable to connect your Xbox to the network.
If the Xbox registration fails:
-
If OneCast cannot find any consoles after logging in to Xbox
Live, this is probably because you've not yet enabled remote features on your console. Open Settings on your Xbox and navigate to
Devices & connections - Remote features
and make sure that Enable remote features is
ticked. If you find that it is already ticked, then please first toggle it off, then back on again. Now you can try registering with OneCast again.
- OneCast reports error 7004, 8011 or 9003:
your iOS device must be able to connect to the internet in
order to perform Xbox registration. Ensure that you are
able to connect to the internet.
- OneCast reports error 9005 or 9006: Please fully
power off your console (pull the power cord out and leave
disconnected for 30 seconds, this step is important), turn it
back on, and try again.
- Ensure both Xbox and iOS device are on the same
network. On the iOS device, open the WiFi settings and ensure
that it has not unexpectedly changed to a different WiFi
connection.
If you cannot connect to the Xbox:
- Ensure that both Xbox and iOS device are on the same
network. On the iOS device, open the WiFi settings and ensure
that it has not unexpectedly changed to a different WiFi
connection.
- OneCast reports error 7004, 8011 or
9003:
your iOS device must be able to connect to the internet in
order to use remote play. Ensure that you are able to
connect to the internet.
- OneCast reports error 9005 or 9006: Please fully
power off your console (pull the power cord out and leave
disconnected for 30 seconds, this step is important), turn it
back on, and try again.
- If your Xbox is set to Shut-down (energy saving)
when it turns off, then you must manually power the console on
before you can connect with OneCast.
If configure for internet play failed:
-
Error 4003 - "Double NAT" detected: This is a
situation where there are multiple network devices (routers,
modems etc) chained together on your network. One common
example is running your own router alongside the modem/router
combo that your ISP gave you. You'll need to resolve your
double NAT issue before you can use OneCast over the internet.
Please see this article for a more detailed explanation of
what exactly a double NAT is, and how you can fix it:
http://www.howtogeek.com/255206/how-use-your-router-and-isps-modemrouter-combo-in-tandem/
-
Error 4006, 4007, 4008: Your router does not
support automatic port forwarding. You must manually forward
ports according to the instructions in the
Playing over the internet section above.
If your physical controller is not responding:
When your physical controller is connected, you
will see the game controller icon displayed to the left of the
help icon at the OneCast home screen. If you do not see this, then
the controller is not correctly connected to your iOS device.
- Verify that your controller is not paired with and/or
connected to a different device.
- Some MFi controllers require that a companion app be
installed on your iOS device before the controller can be
used. If your MFi controller has a companion app, ensure that
it is installed.
